The New Luxury? Singapore Hotels Are Selling Memories

Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t remember the last time I booked a hotel purely because it had a nice room. These days, it’s the rooftop pool that catches my eye, the breakfast buffet that gets me excited and the little extras that make me feel like I’ve escaped everyday life for a moment. It seems Singapore’s hotels have noticed this shift too.

Across the city, hotels are increasingly focusing on experiences rather than simply accommodation. From chef collaborations and wellness retreats to rooftop events and lifestyle packages, the goal is no longer just to fill rooms. It’s to create moments guests will talk about long after they’ve checked out. In a city that already competes on luxury, food and service, experiences are becoming the next battleground.

Perhaps that’s why this trend resonates with me. My husband spent years working for Mandarin Oriental Singapore and also within the Mandarin Oriental group in Malaysia. Looking back, we spent countless nights in beautiful hotels that we almost took for granted at the time. The stunning lobbies, the attentive service, the indulgent breakfasts and those little touches that make a stay feel special all seemed so normal then.

Today, I realise those experiences became some of our favourite memories. Nobody comes home talking about the thread count of the bedsheets. They talk about the sunset view, the meal they can’t stop thinking about, or the feeling of being completely looked after for a few days.

The question is: as Singapore’s hotel scene becomes increasingly experience-driven, what will be the next memory hotels create that guests simply can’t stop talking about?
